Dr. Paul Hessburg – Forestry Scientist

Megafires: How Do You Want Your Smoke?

Paul Hessburg, Ph.D is a research ecologist who has been studying historical and modern era forests for more than 30 years.  His work documents large changes in forest conditions and how these changes, along with climate change, have set the stage for large and severe wildfires.  Local wildfires that ravaged his favorite forests in 2014 and 2015 served as the impetus for Dr. Hessburg to make his findings more accessible to the public.   Dr. Hessburg contends that “the current megafire issue is a social problem with an ecological explanation. To tackle it, we need to understand how we got here, what’s at stake, and what each of us can do.”   His work with the Forest Service at the Pacific Northwest Research Station earned him the Forest Service’s Distinguished Scientist Award in 2017. Dr. Hessburg is also an Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington, Seattle.

In 2007 she became the first Deputy Prime Minister and in 2010, despite being in the minority, she was elected Prime Minister.  She recounts her tenure and the challenges of being a female leader in her autobiography, My Story.

Optimizing Brain Health Through Each Stage of Life

Dr. John Medina is a developmental molecular biologist, researcher, professor and the author of ten books. His New York Times best-seller, Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School has been celebrated as the standard handbook on understanding the brain and optimizing its performance. Dr. Medina’s focus is on the genes behind brain development and psychiatric conditions.

Dr. Medina’s gift is to bring the complexities of the workings of brain systems to life for non-scientists. He does this on his website where many aspects of brain health, including every chapter of Brain Rules, are explained and illustrated in short videos.

His extensive study of the developing brain has resulted in three recent books which further explore the brain’s life stages:  Brain Rules for Baby, Brain Rules for Aging Well, and Attack of the Teenage Brain!

David Epstein is a former senior writer at Sports Illustrated and the author of the The New York Times best-seller, The Sports Gene, Inside the Science of Extraordinary Athletic Performance. He is one of the top sports science and medicine investigative journalists in America; he co-authored the 2009 report, for example, that revealed Alex Rodriguez’s use of steroids.

Epstein was an All-American college track star and is fascinated by what it takes to be a champion.  Is it 10,000 hours of practice and determination, or are we born with genes that determine how well we can perform?  He addresses how and why athletes train through “learned performance,” in addition to how coaches develop the athletes they lead. The wisdom Epstein shares on brain sports science and finding and maximizing one’s hidden talents produces lessons applicable to us all.
