San Joaquin Valley Town Hall Presents "Astrophysicist" Alex Filippenko

Dark Energy and the Runaway Universe

Alex Filippenko and his collaborators are determining the nature of the progenitor stars and the explosion mechanisms of different types of supernovae and gamma-ray bursts. He is also using supernovae as cosmological distance indicators, and was a member of both teams that discovered (in 1998) the accelerating expansion of the Universe, probably driven by "dark energy"; this discovery was honored with the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics to the team leaders. He also works on quantifying the physical properties of quasars and active galaxies, and he searches for black holes in both X-ray binary stars and nearby galactic nuclei. His group has developed the 0.76-meter Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope (KAIT) at Lick Observatory, which is conducting one of the world's most successful searches for relatively nearby supernovae.

Comedian Bill Cosby

Over the past century, few entertainers have achieved the legendary status of William H. Cosby Jr. His successes span five decades and virtually all media, remarkable accomplishments for a kid who emerged from humble beginnings in a Philly project.

In the 1960s, his stand-up act was a coast-to-coast sensation, spawning a string of hilarious, best-selling comedy albums, which went on to win eight Gold Records, five Platinum records and five Grammy Awards. His role on TV’s I Spy made him the first African-American to co-star in a dramatic series, breaking television’s racial barrier and winning three Emmy Awards. In the 1980s, he again rocked the television world with the The Cosby Show, a gentle, whimsical and hugely successful series that single-handedly revived the family sitcom (and rescued NBC).

Community Leaders Celebrate the Central Valley at 66th Annual Prayer Breakfast

“This community tradition celebrates our blessings as a community and upholds our public officials in prayer as they carry out their duties,” said committee chairman, Don Eskes with Fresno Rescue Mission.

Dr. Pete Menjares, currently serving as the 11th President of Fresno Pacific University, and his wife, Virginia, will keynote with inspirational messages, much like the humble beginnings of what has become one of the valley’s largest annual community gatherings.

The annual Prayer Breakfast began in the 1940’s when five businessmen started meeting at a ivisadero Street restaurant for prayer and fellowship. Today, the event draws Christians of all backgrounds from the Fresno and Clovis communities and has spanned the terms of eleven Fresno mayors. The event has grown to include Clovis mayors and keynote speakers from all experiences, such as pastors, public servants, judges, sports figures, community activists and community leaders like Dr. Menjares.

Dr. Menjares began as a public school teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District, where he taught middle school for seven years. He then served for 18 years as a faculty member in the School of Education and as Vice Provost for Faculty Development and Academic Effectiveness at Biola Universty. He earned a Ph.D. from the Univeristy of Southern California in Education with a specialization in Language, Literacy and Learning. In 2005, Dr. Menjares was awarded the Robert B. Fischer Award for Faculty Excellence, the highest honor given by the Biola University faculty.

Raisin Bargaining Association Meeting

Prior to 1967, California’s raisin farmers faced the burden of negotiating their own price for raisins. Growers were paid through “open price” contracts. They didn’t know how much or when they would be paid for their raisins. These “open price” contracts led to great disparity and financial hardship for many raisin farmers. A courageous group of farmers took a bold step and the RBA was formed!

Les Ballets Trockadero De Monte Carlo

LES BALLETS TROCKADERO DE MONTE CARLO is a company of professional male dancers performing the full range of the ballet and modern dance repertoire, including classical and original works
in faithful renditions of the manners and conceits of these dance styles.
The comedy is achieved by incorporating and exaggerating the foibles,
accidents and underlying incongruities of serious dance, (including the subtle hilarity of undeniably male bodies performing –expertly – some of the most delicate steps of female choreography).

Performing such ballets as Swan Lake--Act II, Stars and Stripes Forever, & Le Corsaire , the TROCKS continue their tradition of bringing the pleasure of dance to the widest possible audience. They will, as they have done for over 37 years—in Europe, Asia, South America, Russia, Australia and 49 states of the USA—“Keep on Trockin’.”

Broadway in Fresno Presents WICKED

Back by “Popular” demand. Variety calls WICKED "a cultural phenomenon,” and every time it plays Fresno, it breaks box office records. Winner of over 50 major awards, including a Grammy and three Tony Awards, WICKED is “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster” (The New York Times).

Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkinland, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One - born with emerald green skin - is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good makes for "the most complete - and completely satisfying - new musical in a long time" (USA Today).

San Joaquin Valley Town Hall Presents Carl Bernstein

The System Can Work

At the podium, Bernstein addresses the increasing dysfunction of America’s governmental institutions and its devolving political-media culture. Though his presentation is a hard-eyed analysis, it is accompanied by rapier wit and constructive ideas for reversing the most consequential areas of national decline: the Congress of the United States (“the broken branch”); an increasingly secretive American presidency; an economy tilted against middle-class citizens; and a media landscape littered with misinformation and disinformation. His presentation – as regular viewers of Morning Joe and other broadcasts on which he appears can attest – is filled with both good humor and acute examination.

Brit Floyd - Discovery World Tour 2014

Having performed to over one million fans around the world since their first show in Liverpool, England in January 2011, Brit Floyd - The World's Greatest Pink Floyd Show, returns to Fresno’s Saroyan Theatre on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 Discovery World Tour 2014, a spectacular live production and dazzling new light and laser show with music from all fourteen Pink Floyd studio albums.

Named after Pink Floyd’s recent box set of the same name, and featuring music from the Syd Barrett led '60s psychedelic pop of ‘The Piper at the Gates of Dawn’, through to the nineties ‘The Division Bell’, and everything in between, the brand new Discovery show will capture in note-for-note detail, all your favorite moments as well as a few lesser known gems, from one of the most outstanding and enduring back catalogues in the history of recorded music.

Featuring the trademark Pink Floyd arch and circle light show, Brit Floyd’s musical performance will also be accompanied by amazing original video and brand new animation, inspired by the timelessly brilliant artwork designs of longtime Pink Floyd collaborator Storm Thorgerson.

With painstaking attention to detail, replicating every nuance of every Floydian moment both musically and visually, the band's execution of all Pink Floyd's greatest works will make each familiar track sound fresh and pristine.

Queen - It's a Kinda Magic

Queen songs are anthems, the band legendary and Freddie Mercury iconic! Queen - It's a Kinda Magic transcends the void of reality and make-believe. TYLER PERRY'S "Hell Hath No Fury Like A Woman Scorned"

Yes…the title is absolutely true. One lesson to learn in life, you can’t scorn a woman and think you’ve achieved an accomplishment. It never works out!

The bizarre story of Anita (Cheryl "Pepsii" Riley) a lonely woman who meets a man in a manner that is becoming more popular these days. He treats her like a Nubian Queen when they first meet. However, Grandma Hattie (Patrice Lovely) and Anita's best friend, Jasmine (Monica Blaire) have their reservations about him and so when things changed, they REALLY changed. Well, the rest of the events are unpredictable and entertaining!

Tyler Perry’s new production is remarkable presenting another array of new cast members! The exceptional acting and outstanding singing will amaze the audiences in the high and low moments. Cast member Cheryl “Pepsii” Riley is a familiar favorite from several past Tyler Perry productions. Patrice Lovely is seen on "Love Thy Neighbor" weekly on the OWN Network. Completing this artistic cast roster is some of the best talent you will find. Ray Lavendar (Victor); Zebulon Ellis (Reverend); Muhammed Ayers (Randy); Candice Pye (Mona) and Olrick Johnson (Detective Larry).

Casting Crowns

Following a successful 40-city spring run, multiplatinum-selling group Casting Crowns will extend its THRIVE Tour and play Fresno’s Selland Arena on September 23rd. The THRIVE Tour will feature GRAMMY® nominee Mandisa and Dove Aware nominees Sidewalk Prophets. Casting Crowns has garnered numerous accolades including three GRAMMY® nominations, an RIAA 2x multi-Platinum certification and multiple RIAA Gold certifications, with total album sales surpassing 8 million. Building on that momentum, The THRIVE Tour is sure to not disappoint, with a set list that includes Casting Crowns’ biggest hits – spanning more than a decade of ministry – in addition to selections from the group’s new release, THRIVE (Beach Street/Reunion Records), the band’s first full-length effort in two years.

The songs on THRIVE are an extension of what lead singer/songwriter Mark Hall has been teaching his students at Eagle’s Landing First Baptist Church in Atlanta, where he serves as youth pastor. The heart behind the project is for these songs to encourage believers to dig down into the roots of who they are in Christ so that they are fully equipped to reach out and share their faith with others. Following this theme, half of the songs on the album are focused on “reaching out,” while the other half are dedicated to “digging deep.”

Jose Ramirez Headlines “FIGHT FOR WATER 3”

Central Valley 2012 USA Olympian and undefeated (11-0, 8 KO's) professional Top Rank fighter Jose Ramirez will be in the main event on a nationally televised "Fight for Water 3" Saturday, Oct 25 at the Selland Arena in Fresno, Calif.

This is a big event, building off the history-making Fight for Water 1 and 2 which drew record crowds, sponsors and revenue in boxing. Its seldom if ever seen a fighter at this level draw this type of response in the sport.

"We are very proud of Jose as a fighter and as a young man who cares for his community. When Jose goes into the ring he really does 'Fight for Water' which is so important to Fresno and all surrounding communities," said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank.

"This fight is special to me because on November 1st we have a chance to get the water flowing back in Central California and help keep jobs, food and hope alive. Please vote YES on the Water Bond, as no matter how big this fight is the real fight is the Fight for Water," said Jose Ramirez.

"We are doing things never seen at this level in boxing and It's an honor for me to not only help showcase the future of the sport in Jose Ramirez but to show the nation that we can compete with anyone in doing world class sporting events from the Central Valley," said promoter-agent Rick Mirigian.

"The California Latino Water Coalition is very thankful to Top Rank and Bob Arum for allowing his organization to highlight California's historical drought and the Coalitions fight for water," said Mario Santoyo

California is in a historical drought. Water supplies are running out and the state government is now policing the usage of water and issuing out serious fines to the public. The Central Valley which is the nation's number one food producer has hardly any water to grow food.

Jose Ramirez understands and cares about the farm workers and Farmers who have lost their jobs and farms and he is committed to make a difference in helping.

The solution is to build new reservoirs to store water in wet years for dry years.

The Coalition hopes to pass a California water bond on the November 2014 ballot.

This boxing event will be televised nationally on Top Rank's Solo Boxeo Tecate telecast on UniMas.

San Joaquin Valley Town Hall Presents Jerry Greenfield

Ice Cream, Social Responsibility and an Innovative Business Philosophy

When Jerry Greenfield and Ben Cohen opened their storefront in Burlington, Vermont more than 30 years ago, neither could have predicted that their passion for ice cream would spark a revolution in social and business strategy that would be copied by conglomerates and small businesses alike. All these years later, as Ben & Jerry’s serves its ice cream around the world, its co-founder is still thinking about ways that successful business can help develop social responsibility into a win win for the company and the community.
